How much do break pads and struts cost?

For a 1991 318i convertible bmw...would you say a person can install them themselves? how difficult would it be? what happens if I don't get the struts or break pads..would the car suddenly drive off or not stop? I don't know much about cars but I want to. My brother knows somewhat but still.. anyway advice is welcomed.
